The main changes present in this game revolve around adjusted gameplay mechanics. The game itself is a port of the original Wii title, with all the same story and level content an eruption of the volcano on Donkey Kong’s home island unleashes the Tik Tak Tribe, a group of living wooden masks who set about stealing his banana horde and generally causing trouble on the island, which Donkey Kong sets out to rectify. Thankfully with its move to the 3DS, Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D has seen a few tweaks to make it better suited to short bursts of gaming on the go. As much as I loved playing DKCR on Wii, I found it hard to progress. Leo is the guy at Stevivor who likes his games hard, whereas I’m happy to take it easy (pun intended).
#Reviews for donkey kong 3 series
I realise that the difficulty of the DK series is one of its hallmarks, but I wasn’t prepared. The series’ return to modern gaming seemed like a great way to jump on the Donkey Kong train. I’d never had the chance to play the older games in the series, having started my gaming career on a Mega Drive and not entering the Nintendo console world until the Wii. It’s why it isn’t on Donkey Kong Classics cart, and it’s why Nintendo NEVER talks about this game. When it first came out on the Wii, I was very excited for Donkey Kong Country Returns. What about this game? They don’t want to believe it is bad. Also, Nintendo is known for their legendary output during the NES. They only associate Donkey Kong with quality gaming so this game causes their heads to spin. People keep trying to put this game in a good light because of two brands: Donkey Kong and Nintendo. Like many NES games, this one has heavy nostalgia for the unfortunate kids that grew up with it. It is WAY more complicated and… it just sucks. I don’t even think the basic gameplay is even fun. The game is sooo samey that it drops down lower. It is a game I NEVER want to return to so it is five and below. So what score does this game get? I’m giving it a three. We assume Nintendo was chasing the Space Invaders money which was probably more of a thing in Japan (Donkey Kong 3 apparently did OK there), but the game was a massive flop in North America. Since Nintendo hasn’t spoken publicly on this game, all we can do is guess. Miyamoto was the director so this is a Miyamoto game. I also looked up the history of this game. I looked up some reviews to see if they were on the same page as I was, and THEY WERE.

The stages are all samey, and there is only three of them. Game is definitely different and not just Donkey Kong with ‘more levels’. Here is what I like versus what I don’t like: The only entertainment I get from Donkey Kong 3 is that I get of watching a car wreck as I drive by. My basis of judgement is based solely on if I want to return to the game. I know there are defenders of this game out there, and I know you like that it is *different*. WTF Nintendo? This game tops Metroid Other M as series destroying game from Nintendo.

THIS game killed Donkey Kong! It’s a game where you do nothing but shoot Donkey Kong’s ass. THIS game is why Donkey Kong franchise just *died* and needed resurrecting by Rare with Donkey Kong Country. Being used to better response times, I consider the game more broken and not challenging.

There is also some lag when you hop around. The platform hopping / shmup gameplay isn’t the hottest because you’re somewhat limited to your shots on the screen. And once I realize it, I’m already bored of the game. Honestly, it took me some time to remember how this game worked. If Stanley touches a bug or snake or loses his flowers (!), it is game over! Sometimes they fly different patterns, and sometimes they take your flower (!). All together there appears to be three stages. It is Stanley the Bugman who does nothing but shoot Donkey Kong in the ass! Once Donkey Kong’s ass burns so much to make him climb into the bee hive, you go to the next stage and do it all over again. There is no story because there is no ending. Imagine if someone combined a shmup with Missile Command or Defender and then threw in Donkey Kong. Donkey Kong 3 has NOTHING in common with Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong JR except for Donkey Kong. I’m like, “WTF?” Sequels are supposed to be like the prior game.
